SPONTAAN 2007 in Welkom was a huge success with more than a hundred aspiring stars pitching for a spot under the bright lights.
The competition was very stiff and judges had a hard time sifting through the hopefuls.
A wide range of genres presented themselves, including opera, gospel, country, rap, kwaito, rock and popular music.
The participants, who all sang a cappella, sang in the language of their choice.
The competition once again proved the abundance of talent in this region. In the words of Andy Galloway, organiser of Spontaan 2007: “There can only be one winner. There is a lot of talent here. Do not be discouraged if you do not make it. Keep on training your voice, and try again.”
The judges first sifted the entries to 26, and then there were nine.
Although many people liken Spontaan to other popular singing competitions, it is unique.
The judging method is kinder, participants are encouraged and there is also an element of fun.
Spontaan has become almost like a family gathering for judges and participants alike in Welkom, with many familiar faces presenting themselves year after year.
Due to the prizes, which include a R15 000 bursary from Damelin, many singers want to go to the finals in Bloemfontein.
The finals will take place on 14 July on the University of the Free State’s campus.
Vista’s winner, Nastasha Rossouw, will compete against eight other regional winners from the Volksblad Group’s community newspapers for first place.
Born and bred in Riebeeckstad, Natasha was also a member of the Free State Youth Choir.
Natasha is an accomplished singer.
She has taken part in numerous national competitions and has also won Melodies SA.
Last year she reached the top 20 of Supersterre and she has already reached the top 100 of the same competition this year.
Natasha is no stranger to the Goldfields and sang with the band Topaz for many years.
